Functional Management and Operations Workshop is Introduced in Michigan

John Walker introduced Functional Management - 2010 at a two-day workshop in Ann Arbor, Michigan on January 19th and 20th. The focus of the event was how management can create a positive, high-energy work environment that brings out the best in employees. The hands-on event provided attending managers the opportunity to set-up the programmed management process developed for the (OS1) system.

During the workshop participants first learned the difference between between functional and dysfunctional management models. They explored different styles of organizational approaches and the pitfalls that are systemic in custodial operations. The team management process called Functional Management was introduced to the group as an alternative to traditional area or zone custodial management.

Each participant received a softbound Functional Operations for Cleaning Organizations SIMPLIFIED workbook. It includes space for note-taking, an in-depth summary of the workshop content and resource materials and readings. At the end of the program participants were awarded a Continuing Education Unit Certificate suitable for framing.

The workshop began with demonstrating how to create and install an (OS1) Management “War Room.” The participants had the opportunity to assist in setting up the standardized Organization Board and Information Board in the war room. A customized magnet board and accompanying cork board were transformed into standardized (OS1) organizational tools.

The participants learned how to do the following in (OS1):

  • Make color-coded name, event and supervision magnets
  • Set up an (OS1) transition organization chart and calendar
  • Use the P-touch labeler and various color-coded tape
  • Display the functional management assignments
  • Display employee job movement
  • Build headings and borders for maximum effect
  • Use the war room for planning, tactics and strategy

The eight functions of management were presented and defined. An in depth analysis of sequence of work, instruction cards, time and expense, disciplinarian, trainer and job coach, speed of work, preventative maintenance and compliance inspector was provided. Planning management was contrasted with performing management. A group activity matched each participant with the management functions that they had a special aptitude for. It also identified the functions that each manager should avoid due to a lack of aptitude for that function. After the aptitude exercise initial functional management assignments were made made for the group. Several of the University of Michigan participants attend the February Janitor University to follow through on their adoption of the new management concept.

Participants at the January workshop included Jim Ginnaty from SEARHC, several managers and supervisors from the University of Michigan including John Lawter, Carie Kloack, Jan Allen, Darryl Betts, Maggie Garcia, Gordon Moore, Anna Tobias and Tim Poskin from ManageMen.
